01 — The Problem

Wind farms generate noise,
not insight

Engineers were drowning in raw operational data — alarms, signal logs, production figures — with no coherent way to understand where energy was being lost and why.

The existing tools were powerful but opaque. The gap between "something is wrong" and "here's what to do" was costing real megawatts daily.

01
Data overload
Hundreds of alarm types with no clear hierarchy of critical vs. informational noise.
02
No fleet-level view
Site-by-site monitoring only — no way to see cross-fleet patterns or compare turbine families at scale.
03
Loss attribution blind spot
Teams couldn't quickly attribute lost energy to a root cause — grid, ambient, maintenance, or failure.
02 — Process

From alarm soup to decision architecture

01
Discovery
Shadowed turbine engineers for 3 weeks. Mapped workflows. Identified 4 personas with conflicting needs.
02
IA & Flows
Restructured navigation from feature-driven to task-driven. Unified data model for 300+ alarm categories.
03
Visualisation
Designed the Sunburst chart for hierarchical loss — 12 categories, colour-coded by severity, in real time.
04
Iteration
4 rounds of usability testing. Killed 3 features. Simplified filters from 20 parameters to 6.
05
System
Full component library — tables, chart legends, map pins, alarm states — reused across all SGRE products.
03 — The Designs
wind.siemensgamesa.com/fleet
Fleet Dashboard
Fleet Dashboard
Real-time overview of all assets across an entire wind portfolio. Power output, availability, and active alerts surfaced per turbine — with one-click drill-down to any unit.
wind.siemensgamesa.com/losses
Losses Report
Losses Report
Revenue loss attribution by cause — mechanical, grid, curtailment. Filterable by time range and asset group.
wind.siemensgamesa.com/map
Fleet Map
Fleet Map
Geospatial view of all monitored sites. Alert severity surfaced at the asset level so operators can prioritise dispatch without leaving the map.

Turbine Detail
Turbine Detail
Full SCADA readout per turbine: power curve, temperature, vibration, and active fault codes — alongside event history and maintenance log.
wind.siemensgamesa.com/explore
Data Explorer
Data Explorer
Ad-hoc time-series analysis for engineering teams. Multi-sensor correlation with configurable axes and export to structured report.
wind.siemensgamesa.com/alarms/case/8821
Alarm Case
Alarm Case Management
Structured workflow for triaging and resolving active alarms — with root cause logging, escalation path, and resolution checklist. Closes the loop between SCADA alert and field action.
04 — Key Decisions

Three calls that changed the product

Sunburst, not table
Sortable tables couldn't show proportions fast enough. The sunburst cut time-to-insight from 4 minutes to under 30 seconds in testing.
Inline map context
Original: 3 clicks from map pin to turbine stats. Redesigned as a sliding panel — all metrics without leaving the geographic view.
Persistent filter presets
Engineers work with fixed fleet subsets for weeks. Saveable named presets was the highest-requested feature across all testing rounds.
"

The goal wasn't to show more data. It was to show less — but the right data, at exactly the moment an engineer needed to decide.

Design rationale — AEP Explorer

05 — Outcomes

What shipped, and what it did

AEP Explorer shipped to production
Dashboard, losses report, map, and data explorer all live — used by ops teams monitoring real fleets across multiple countries.
Fleet-wide visibility achieved
First time operators could see cross-fleet production performance across regions, technologies, and clients in one view.
Loss attribution time reduced
Sunburst cut time to identify top loss category from 4+ minutes to under 30 seconds in observed testing.
Component foundation for SGRE
Data viz system — charts, map components, alarm states, filter UI — became the foundation for all subsequent products.
