01 — The Problem

Scale breaks
manual QA

Apple produced theme-based playlist covers manually across many flavours. Each SVG needed checking against the design specification — a process that didn't scale. The tooling had to bring that verification into a structured, repeatable workflow.

A second challenge: raw artist mix uploads contained significant debris — poor audio quality, unidentified artists, badly placed cue points. Every track required triage before included artists could receive accurate royalties.

01
Artwork verification
SVG playlist covers produced at scale needed structured QA — visual overlays, spec comparison, and annotation tooling to catch discrepancies before publication.
02
Mix upload triage
Raw artist mixes required validation: audio quality, artist identification, cue point placement — all gating steps before royalty attribution could proceed.
03
Expert users
Apple QA staff are fast, context-rich, expert. The tool had to match their speed — not slow them down with onboarding patterns designed for novices.
02 — Process

Two tools, one mental model

01
Discovery
Embedded with Apple QA for 2 weeks. Observed artwork review and mix triage. Found 7 distinct friction points across both workflows.
02
IA Design
Defined the MVP pipeline: load → overlay → annotate → approve/reject. Applied the same model to both artwork and mix triage for consistency.
03
Overlay Tool
Spec overlay system with opacity control, guide preview, and comment pins directly on the artwork canvas — no context switching to external tools.
04
Mix QA Flow
Song ID → quality check → cue validation → artist attribution → approve. Each step required before the track advances in the pipeline.
05
Integration
All components designed within Apple HIG constraints and delivered ready for integration with the existing internal platform design system.
03 — The Designs
Aztec artwork — UX Deliverables overview
UX Deliverables — Preview App & Mix QA
Full wireflow and deliverable set for both tools. The artwork review pipeline and mix triage flow share the same queue-and-review IA — QA staff operate across both without re-learning a new interaction pattern.

Artwork Opened — Review Canvas
Artwork Opened — Review Canvas
The full-screen review canvas. Spec overlay controls allow QA staff to compare the produced SVG directly against the original design and pin comments to regions needing revision.

Guide overlay — spec comparison
Overlay Guide — Spec Comparison
Adjustable spec overlays with opacity control and guide preview. QA staff compare produced artwork pixel-for-pixel against design specs without leaving the review canvas.

Viewing Markers — Mix QA (Shwrn)
Viewing Markers — Mix QA (Shwrn)
The mix triage interface. Raw artist uploads are loaded with cue markers visible on the waveform timeline. QA staff verify artist identification, audio quality, and cue placement before approving the track for royalty attribution downstream.
04 — Key Decisions

Tools built for experts, not onboarding

Overlay as primary action
Spec overlay sits directly on the artwork rather than side-by-side. One canvas, one context — faster review with no cognitive switching between views.
Pipeline as navigation
Both tools use the same queue-and-triage model. QA staff learn one pattern and apply it across artwork and mix review — onboarding time near-zero.
💬
Comments anchored to content
Annotations pinned to specific artwork coordinates or timeline positions — not free-floating text. Context preserved when issues route back to creators.

Internal QA tools are used by people who already know exactly what they're doing. The job is to get out of their way.

05 — Outcomes

Structured QA at Apple scale

Artwork QA tool shipped
SVG overlay comparison system deployed internally. Playlist artwork reviews moved from ad-hoc visual comparison to structured, annotated pipeline.
Mix triage pipeline live
Raw artist upload validation flow deployed. Cue verification, artist ID, and quality checks consolidated into a single review interface.
Single interaction model
Both tools share the same queue-and-review IA. QA staff operate across both products without context switching between different interaction paradigms.
💰
Royalty attribution accuracy
Structured mix QA reduced mis-attributed royalties by enforcing a mandatory artist identification step before any upload progressed to distribution.
